Power Restored at Solano Widenmann Leadership Academy; Classes Resume Feb. 4
Solano Widenmann Leadership Academy will welcome students back on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
VALLEJO, Calif. – Vallejo City Unified School District (VCUSD) proudly announces that crews have fully restored power at Solano Widenmann Leadership Academy and classes will resume as scheduled on Tuesday, Feb. 4. The district appreciates the patience, flexibility, and support of students, families, and staff throughout this unexpected situation.
Due to copper theft at Solano Widenmann Leadership Academy on Saturday, Jan. 25, which left the school without electricity, the Vallejo City Unified School District implemented measures to ensure learning continuity and minimize disruption for students and families during the site’s temporary closure for repairs.
The school was closed on Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 27 and 28. Starting Wednesday, Jan. 29, alternative learning hubs opened at six school sites: Cooper, Dan Mini, Federal Terrace, Highland, and Patterson Elementary Schools, as well as Loma Vista Environmental Science Academy. These hubs provided academic instruction and resources, with educators from elementary and middle schools supporting students as they completed independent study work prepared by their teachers. Those who could not attend the learning hubs could receive coursework for independent study at home.
VCUSD Superintendent Rubén Aurelio expressed gratitude to neighboring schools that hosted displaced students and staff, highlighting the unity within the VCUSD community.
“This event showcased the generosity and solidarity that define our district,” Aurelio said.
The district also recognizes the work of its operations team and contractor, Pacific Power Systems, whose swift efforts ensured that repairs were completed efficiently with minimal disruption. In response to the incident, enhanced security measures have been implemented to help prevent future occurrences, reinforcing the district’s commitment to safety.
“Repair costs, security measures, and site hardening will total more than $200,000 once all work is completed. However, the financial impact is just one challenge this situation has created. The strain on a tight district budget will extend beyond this school year,” Aurelio said.
